Outlander Panel
San Diego Comic-Con 2015
San Diego Convention Center
July 11, 2015

I had to leave Ballroom 20 after the TV Guide Favorites panel due to a friend’s panel at 1pm at the San Diego Library.  After his panel, I raced back to Ballroom 20 in an attempt to get inside in time for the Grimm panel at 3pm.  The Grimm, Outlander, and Hannibal panels (here\’s my recap of the Hannibal panel) were back to back in Ballroom 20 beginning at 3pm, and I really wanted to see all of them.  I managed to make it into Ballroom 20 about halfway through the Grimmpanel, and was able to move up a little bit for the Outlander panel.

I know many people liked the drinking game that was played for the Outlander panel, but given the short time, I really wish they hadn’t wasted it on that.  If the moderator doesn’t have many questions for the panelists, then use the time for audience questions.  There was a long line of fans waiting to ask questions, and I feel that the time could have been better used.  The game consisted on them being able to read lines (from various sources) with a straight face, if they broke, they had to drink.  It didn’t give insight for the show or the Outlander books, nor the actors or their roles.  Adding an extra “challenge” to the game with “Fifty Shades of Grey” references was just ridiculous.

The most important tidbit from the panel is that Diana Gabaldon is writing the script for an episode in season 2, and the DVD/Bluray for Season 1, part 2 of Outlander will be released on September 29, 2015.

The best part is Sam Heughan fulfilling his part of a friendly bet between he and Colin O’Donaghue (Hook on ABC’s Once Upon A Time) regarding the EW Alpha Male contest.  Sam dressed as O’Donaghue’s Captain Hook on stage, and Caitriona Balfe eagerly volunteered to put black “guyliner” on Sam including giving him a little more facial “hair.”  He stayed in that outfit for the short time left of the panel.  It did provide a little discomfort for him when he was asked about performing the rape scene near then end of the season in Outlander.  He admitted that he felt a little uncomfortable to address the topic when he was “dressed like this.”  I think that’s a perfectly valid and understandable feeling to say the least.

A little awkward to answer such a serious question when you look like this!

I think they had already begun shooting season 2, so I was interested to find out how far they were or anything about season 2, but we didn\’t really get any information except what I mentioned above.

Hoping for a better panel the next time for Outlander.
