Nerd HQ was held at the new Children’s Museum only a few short blocks away from the Children’s park during the four days of San Diego Comic-Con. The first thing I did upon arriving was register to receive my wristband. They also gave out little Nerd Machine medallions which were hung on ball chains. There were a few food trucks selling food behind the registration booth. I skipped those and went inside the museum.

There is a small café inside which serves healthy food, and The Nerd Machine had a merchandise store set up as well. There were games to be played, a lounge area inside and more seating and tables on the outside patio. There were more game demos on the second level and the Conversations for a Cause panels were held on the lower level. I got a photo taken at the X-Men Rogue edition photo op and entered to win a massive PC computer.

Zachary Quinto was scheduled to be on the Hitman: Agent 47 panel, but was “stuck” filming Star Trek 3 and couldn’t come to San Diego. Rupert Friend and Hannah Ware participated in the panel which was fun and entertaining. Also, how is Zachary Levi even better looking in person?!

There was doubt amongst fans of Nerd HQ happening this year due to the enormous cost and trouble finding sponsors to keep Nerd HQ happening and a free for all (no San Diego Comic-Con badge required). The museum is a much smaller space, but I also felt that it\’s more comfortable than the concourse at Petco park. I understand that the room for the Conversations for a Cause panels is much smaller, but that has it\’s pluses and minuses, too. The lack of stadium-style seating means it\’s harder for shorter people to see over people in front of them, and fewer seats means purchasing tickets is that much more difficult, but you are also that much closer to the stage and the panelists making the experience much more intimate and friendly. With these ticket sales benefiting Operation Smile (as well as the money raised from the Smiles for Smiles photo ops), the panels being livestreamed and uploaded to YouTube for repeat viewing, no one really loses with Nerd HQ (except, perhaps, Zac\’s bank account) so lets be grateful and gracious and enjoy the ride.
On that note: I hope I\’ll be able to get Nathan Fillion tickets next year!
